Experts warn that despite significant investments in research capacity in Africa, there exists a continuous gap in statistical knowledge which creates a barrier for much of the continent's data and makes it difficult to replicate or use effectively.
This is according to a current research study titled, “African network for statistical excellence health research,’’ by researchers from the University of Nairobi in collaboration with other institutions, which indicates that while many African nations are producing more studies than ever before, the findings are frequently fragile due to weak statistical foundations. According to this study, existing research solutions which despite their problem-solving capabilities have been criticized for being too disconnected and geographically limited
To combat this, the researchers have proposed calls for a shift away from short-term training in institutions and limited research toward a coordinated, continent-wide statistical training through structured collaboration between institutions facing similar methodological challenges.
This would also include accessible training resources, mentorship, incorporation of statistics into existing curricula, and practical support linked to ongoing research activities in the continent.
This recommendation aims to boost and strengthen the global credibility of African health research.
According to this study, if these recommendations are successfully implemented, this integrated approach could transform African health research to a high-impact, reliable pillar of global science.
