Kenya branch of the First Aid Club University of Nairobi, Basic Surgical Skills Training.

The President’s Award – Kenya branch  of the First Aid Club University of Nairobi, successfully organized a Basic Surgical Skills Training on April 11th 2025, for 20 students held at the Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre, Chiromo.

This session was facilitated by the Nairobi Surgical Skills Forum (NSSF), led by senior surgical students who once again brought their invaluable knowledge and dedication to deliver a transformative learning experience. This training lays strong foundational surgical skills for the future medical professionals.

The areas: Intensive training covered six key surgical skills:

Scrubbing and Sterilization

Participants were taught the step-by-step technique of maintaining a sterile environment—an essential component in any operating room. This included proper hand hygiene, scrubbing sequences, and how to preserve sterility throughout a procedure.

Gowning

The training emphasized the importance of sterile gowning. Under the guidance of the trainers, participants practiced the correct procedures for donning and doffing surgical gowns and gloves, an essential practice in upholding aseptic conditions.

Introduction to surgical instruments

Students were introduced to a variety of commonly used surgical tools. They learned the names, functions, and proper handling of instruments such as scalpels, forceps, and scissors, and needle holders— knowledge critical to surgical proficiency.

Basic Suturing

Always a highlight, the suturing session gave students hands-on experience with basic techniques. Participants practiced making incisions and performing different sutures under close supervision—learning both precision and technique in wound closure.

Types of sutures and their applications

To complete the learning experience, the session included an overview of various suture materials and their ideal applications across different tissue types. Understanding how to select and apply the right suture is a vital aspect of surgical care.
