The University of Nairobi has officially welcomed its 2026/27 First year class with a strong emphasis on student-centered development and holistic experience.
In his address during the Vice Chancellor’s address, on the 27th August 2026 at Taifa Hall, the VC emphasized a vision centered on student-led growth. Referring to students as the lifeblood of the institution, the VC outlined six strategic priorities to drive the university's agenda: student success and wellbeing, research and innovation, digital transformation, infrastructure development, staff empowerment, and strengthening global and alumni partnerships.
Welcoming the over 15,000 new students, he reaffirmed UoN’s commitment to scholarly excellence and growth and emphasized on the need for the new students to take full advantage of the opportunities presented to them to ensure their success and growth.
“This University has more than enough spaces for innovation, sport, talent, the arts, research and enterprise. Use them to your advantage. They are part of your education too. The 2026/2027 cohort, you have been given a good opportunity to excel holistically. What you make of this opportunity is now up to you,” he said.
Drawing on personal experience as a former student, the VC underscored the importance of a well-rounded university experience, urging the cohort to look beyond mere academic performance. "Don't just chase marks; focus on building competence, confidence, and relationships. Enjoy your time, but stay mindful of your own responsibility and actions."
DVC Academic Affairs Prof. John Mande reiterated his sentiments urging the students to adjust into life in university responsibly.
“It’s not all about books balance social and spiritual side of your life Enjoy this phase of your life but within established boundaries,” he advised the freshmen.
Representing the student body, UNSA Chairperson Ahmed Rashid pledged to be an advocate for the new students and the larger student population promising to ensure that their interests remain at the forefront.
"Welcome to UoN; this leadership is ready to serve you," Rashid said.
The ceremony which is a years-long tradition by the university to officially welcome incoming first years is founded on the belief that it shapes the new cohort’s conduct, sense of belonging and their progression through the university.
The Faculty of Health Sciences takes this opportunity to welcome all First-year students to Kenya’s premier university.
