Over sixty-six (66) women with fistula have undergone free reconstructive surgery during the free medical camp that ran from 27th June to 12th July 2019 at KNH Clinic 66. A total of 108 patients were admitted and over 500 women screened during the free fistula camp.
The theme of this year’s free fistula camp “No More Suffering in Silence” sought to address challenges faced by women by enhancing the capacities of healthcare systems to prevent, repair and support women with obstetric fistula and also improve access and utilization of safe motherhood services.
While addressing patients and members of the public during the closing ceremony of the camp at KNH, Dr. John Kinuthia representing KNH CEO mentioned that obstetric fistula can lead to death and injuries to the mother, child or both, kidney disease or nerves damage if left untreated. This is unfortunate considering the condition is 100% preventable.
“This campaign by KNH and all our partners is not only about reclaiming women’s dignity but also protecting families and marriages from disintegrating,” he added.
According to John Mafabi, Trade Marketing Manager-Safaricom Foundation, championing the quality of life is one aspect that needs to be embraced and cultivated in the society. “This is the reason Safaricom Foundation is rooting for partnerships that will steer the health agenda,” he added.
The medical camp was organized by Kenyatta National Hospital in partnership with the Flying Doctor Society of Africa, Safaricom Foundation, United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), Citizen TV, the University of Nairobi and African Medical Research Foundation (AMREF).
