DETERMINANTS OF HIV TRANSMISSION AMONG CHILDREN BORN TO HIV-INFECTED MOTHERS ON PMTCT PROGRAM

Elimination and prevention of mother to child human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission remains a global public health concern. Scholars conducted a control case study on determinants of human immunodefiency virus (HIV) transmission among children born to HIV- infected mothers on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) program. The study included cases specifically from Kilifi County.

Identification of significant risk factors of mother to child transmission is essential in reducing the burden of paediatric HIV in terms of cost of treatment, morbidity and mortality.

The study revealed that mothers who skipped PMTCT clinics or did not attend at all were at higher risk of delivering HIV positive babies.
