A comparative study on knowledge and attitudes of Female Genital Mutilation was conducted nurses and midwives in Cyprus and Kenya.
It is estimated that 200 million women are living with Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is a violation of human rights. It has detrimental effects on women's physical and psychological health. Nurses and midwives have an essential role in the management and prevention of FGM.
The study revealed that Kenyan nurses and midwives had more knowledge on FGM include the four different types of FGM. They acquired knowledge of this from their nursing and midwifery school training unlike the few Greek-Cypriot nurses and midwives who acquired their Knowledge on FGM through self-directed learning.
FGM is a practice that is still widely practiced and knowledge about it needs to be spread more widely as revealed by the study. As nurses who are primary health care providers it is more important to equip them with skills to handle patients with FGM related complications.
