On 31st January 2024, the Faculty of Health Sciences welcomed Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, the newly appointed Chancellor of the University of Nairobi. His visit was part of a tour around all faculties and campuses of the University.
In his tour, Prof. Verkooijen was privileged to visit various institutes and departments within the faculty that support and conduct research projects. At the University of Nairobi Institute for Infectious and Tropical Diseases (UNITID), he was able to visit the state of the art labs that provide support for extensive research on tropical and infectious diseases including the recent Covid-19 virus.
At the KAVI Institute of Clinical research headed by Prof. Walter Jaoko, the Chancellor was able to see the research projects that are being done by the institute. Prof. Verkooijen was particularly interested in the HIV/AIDS research being done for a vaccine to combat the virus.
At the tail end of his tour, Prof. Verkooijen had a meeting with the teaching and non-teaching staff, and students as he sought to hear from them their expectations of him as the newly appointed chancellor of the university, which he admitted, is a big hat to wear. During the successful meeting, the faculty expressed need for support in research to propel and advance their research projects especially in the evolving world of technology in the health sector.
The students also got a chance to showcase their innovations that they have developed and the skills they have learnt in the various trainings they undertake including ETAT training program for pediatricians in training.
As a faculty, we congratulate Prof. Verkooijen on his new appointment as the Chancellor of the University and look forward to fruitful interactions to improve the faculty and university at large.
