Launch of The Wound Care Illustrated Text Book

A wound care symposium organized by the wound society of Kenya was held on 28th, July 2023 at the
University of Nairobi at Faculty of Health Sciences Lecture Theatre Three.

The colorful event had a host of doctors speaking on different topics concerning wound care. The
topics included basic wound care knowledge, wound dressing and modern technology, nutrition in
wound care management and management of chronic wounds.

A wound care point prevalence study conducted in Kenyan hospitals by the Wound Care Society of
Kenya revealed that a large percentage of patients who were admitted for in-patient care suffered
from chronic wounds generated either from accidents or from surgical sepsis. The symposium
focused mainly on the Kenyan context of wounds; how they present themselves, prevalent causes
and most effective methods of treatment depending on the context of the patient.

Discussions held after every session allowed for participants and presenters to interact by asking
questions and exchanging ideas based on different experiences when handling wounds.

Mr. Patrick Mwangi of the Kenyatta Teaching and Referral Hospital spoke on his experience setting
up a wound care center. The initial dire situation of wounded patients overflow in the institution to a
well-established unit with wound care specialists. The set up statistically helped save many lives that
would have otherwise been lost from lack of specialized care.

The afternoon session of the symposium included awards and recognitions of wound care
champions. Their efforts to promote quality wound care patients at ground level in different
healthcare centers were commended by the event organizers.

The event was culminated by the launch of The Wound Care Illustrated Text Book 1st Edition. This part of the event was graced by the presence of The Vice Chancellors of Kenyatta University and Mt. Kenya
University, The Dean Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. George Osanjo, Chair of Kenya Medical
practitioners and dentist council and the Chair of the Wound Care Society of Kenya (WCSK).

The pocket sized, visual and easy to read guidebook on wounds has contributions from different
parts of Kenya and highlights day-to-day typical scenarios in wound care and management. The
guests each praised the efforts of the authors of the handbook.

“This remarkable achievement is a culmination of over 5 years of dedicated work,” said Dr.
Ferdinand Nangole, Chair of WCSK who is a coauthor of the book.

The Vice Chancellor of Mount Kenya University praised the local authenticity of the book’s contents.
“It is a home grown solution,” he said.

The Chair of Kenya Medical practitioners and dentist council prof. Khainga a coauthor of the book in
his congratulatory speech said
“The book should be the bible for wound care given its details and simplicity.”

“The book will fill a huge knowledge gap that exists among healthcare workers as far as modern
concepts on wound management are concerned,” said The Cabinet Secretary of Health represented
by Dr. Rebecca Kiptui. She then officially launched the book.
