On the 29th of September, 2023 the Association of Medical Students University of Nairobi (AMSUN) in partnership with Kenya Medical Association hosted the 2nd white coat ceremony for the first year class 2023/2024.
The colorful event was graced by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. George Osanjo, Head of Department of Anatomy Prof. Moses Obimbo, the AMSUN leadership council amongst other University of Nairobi notable alumni from the Faculty.
The speakers who were carefully selected to tailor the needs of the unique 56th cohort of the Faculty took their time to share pieces of wisdom and lessons that they learnt throughout their lives in medical school.
"You get to do more good than an average person in a day as a medic," Dr. Michael Magoha said during his presentation. He emphasized on the need to balance academic and social life to fully grow as a doctor.
The White coat ceremony is significant for medical students as they begin their medical field journey. They are usually cloaked by doctors as a sign of welcome into the profession.
AMSUN being the event organizer marketed heavily on their other arms such as AMSUN Art and Running club which encourage medical students to nature their talents alongside their academics. They showcased the different talents other doctors in the making and those great in history who blended their arts and the science of medicine to create successful paths for themselves.
Prof. Obimbo in his presentation advised the freshmen to learn consistency and commitment to not only the course but in every other aspect of their lives as medics in the making. He also emphasized on the importance of discussion groups for learning purposes- a helping hand through medical school.
The Dean concluded the ceremony by congratulating the 1st year's once again for their achievement of joining medical school. He encouraged them to feel confident in their choice and soldier on through medical school to better the society in the coming days.
"As you get cloaked today, you begin your life of service to humanity," said Prof. Osanjo.
The event came to a climax during the cloaking ceremony where each student was cloaked by the doctors present in the meeting including the Dean himself. They took an oath of commitment to their medical school journey.
