The University of Nairobi in partnership with the Kenyatta Hospital and New European Surgical Academy (NESA) held a second surgical workshop. The main focus being on obstetrics and gynecology health.
A team from NESA led by the founder Dr. Michael Stark and four other gynecology specialists were the main speakers during the workshop, training the attendees on new and improved skills for handling gynecology cases.
The 2-day workshop brought together close to a hundred gynecologists from around the East-African region including Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda and locally from the university and different hospitals.
The event was officially opened by the dean of the faculty of health sciences Prof. George Osanjo. In his remarks, he appreciated the partnership with NESA and encouraged knowledge sharing especially with the residents who are new to the game.
Lecturers from the university’s obstetrics and gynecology department also shared some of their research on post-partum hemorrhage and trends in vaginal hysterectomy in Kenya.
The chair of department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Prof. Eunice Cheserem also spoke on the importance of collaboration and was very grateful for the partnership of the department with NESA.
“The health of women should be prioritized and such forums are a great step towards improving maternal health,” said Prof. Beatrice Kihara, the president of FIGO. She made a guest appearance in support of the training.
Topics shared and discussed included evidence-based cesarean section, the future of ovarian cancer treatment, vaginal hysterectomy and endoscopy. These were presented using data collected in different parts of the world including Israel and Croatia.
At the end of the training the participants were awarded with certificates of participation and a souvenir. Photos of the training can be found here.
