The First Aid Club – University of Nairobi
Where Skill Meets Service
The First Aid Club at the University of Nairobi is a dynamic, student-driven platform designed to equip medical students with life-saving skills while giving back to the community. Rooted in service, leadership, and practical learning, our club is a hub of activity, growth, and impact. The club is a registered students association at the University of Nairobi (UON/CA/AA/DOS/2/2), and based at Faculty of Health Sciences, KNH campus.
What We Do – And Why It Matters:
🔹 First Aid Training
From managing trauma to administering CPR, our members undergo hands-on First Aid training through regular workshops and emergency drills. These foundational skills empower medical students to respond quickly and professionally in real-life emergencies—both in and out of the hospital.
🔹 Basic Surgical Skills
Our sessions on suturing, instrument handling, scrubbing, and sterilization give members early exposure to surgical procedures. Conducted in collaboration with surgical students and professionals, these trainings offer a practical edge during clinical rotations and ward work.
🔹 Water and Fire Rescue
Beyond conventional training, we provide rare but crucial sessions in water safety, fire rescue, and patient evacuation. These trainings are vital for emergency response in disaster-prone settings and sharpen adaptability and crisis leadership in aspiring medics.
🔹 Soft skills workshops
Committed to nurturing a family of competent medics, we conduct focused workshops on skills such as:
- Stress management and resilience building
- Cultural competence and diversity training
- Public speaking and presentation skills
- Ethics and professionalism in medicine
- Empathy, communication and conflict resolution
- Leadership, collaboration, and teamwork
- Career integration
🔹 Humanitarian Outreach
We engage in medical camps, health education, and emergency response missions across informal settlements and underserved areas. These outreach programs build empathy, cultural sensitivity, and the practical experience that shapes well-rounded healthcare professionals.
🔹 Mental Health Awareness
Recognizing the growing need for mental wellness in both patients and healthcare workers, we regularly organize mental health campaigns, safe-space discussions, and stress-management workshops. These initiatives promote self-awareness, peer support, and resilience—especially vital in the demanding medical field.
🔹 Blood Donation Drives
We coordinate and support campus-wide blood donation campaigns in collaboration with hospitals and national banks. These drives directly save lives while instilling a sense of civic duty and community involvement in our members.
🔹 Mentorship Workshops
We’ve partnered with professional bodies such as KMPDU and KMA to offer mentorship series and career talks. These sessions bridge the gap between theory and practice, helping students navigate their medical journey with guidance from seasoned practitioners.
🔹 The President’s Award Scheme
This unique branch of our club pushes students to grow in leadership, physical challenge, and community service. It’s a personal development journey that builds resilience, character, and purpose—complementing the rigors of medical school.
🔹 Collaborations and partnerships
We do this not alone. The club has strategically partnered with institutions such as The Kenya Red Cross Society, International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War, The Presidents Award Kenya, Kenya Medical Association, St. John Ambulance Kenya, and relevant departments at the University of Nairobi, to help advance its mission efficiently, and effectively.
🔹 Student-Led, Student-Focused
Everything we do is run by and for medical students. We believe in peer leadership, teamwork, and giving every member a chance to lead. Whether you’re organizing a training, leading a rescue drill, or planning a mentorship forum, the learning never stops.
Because medicine is more than exams and textbooks—it’s action, empathy, and readiness. The First Aid Club gives you the tools to lead in crisis, the space to grow among peers, and the voice to shape the future of student healthcare leadership.
