AMSUN pre-conference talk: A masterclass on research writing with Prof. Bukusi

Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi makes a presentation during the AMSUN pre-conference talk.

On April 9th, 2025, the Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN) hosted an inspiring pre-conference session under the theme “How to Write and Publish a Research Paper.” This highly anticipated event brought together eager medical students and aspiring researchers, all seeking to sharpen their academic writing skills.

The event’s highlight was the presence of the distinguished Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi, a respected scholar and author in medical research, who graced the occasion as the guest speaker. With decades of experience and a portfolio of acclaimed publications, Prof. Bukusi offered a rare glimpse into her personal journey of becoming a successful academic writer.

In her address, Prof. Bukusi broke down the process of writing a research paper into practical, digestible steps. From formulating a compelling research question, conducting rigorous literature reviews, to navigating the often-intimidating world of peer review and journal submission—she covered it all with clarity, candor, and charisma.

What made her session truly special, however, was her willingness to share the personal side of her journey. Prof. Bukusi spoke about the challenges she faced early in her career—rejected manuscripts, self-doubt, and long hours of revision—and how each hurdle became a stepping stone to mastery. “Behind every great paper is a story of persistence,” she told the audience.

The session concluded with a lively questions and answers segment, where students posed questions ranging from choosing the right journal to balancing research with clinical rotations. The energy in the room was electric—a clear sign that AMSUN is nurturing a generation of inquisitive, research-driven future doctors.

As AMSUN continues to create platforms that foster growth and academic excellence, this pre-conference event stands as a testament to what is possible when knowledge meets mentorship.
