A CALL FOR COMMUNITIES TO FAMILIARIZE WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Organization of Kenya (ADOK) commemorated World Alzheimer’s Day on Friday, 20th September, 2019 at KNH administration grounds.

Representing CEO KNH, Deputy Director Medical Services Dr. Paul Etau highlighted that Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease that not only affects old people but also the young. “Individuals, communities, governments and non -governmental organizations need to be aware of this disease and consciously act either individually or collectively to alleviate the burden of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Etau.

Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain cells (neurons) that is manifested by progressive memory disturbances, impairment in reasoning and personality changes. However, lifestyle changes such as regular health check-ups, adherence to treatment for diseases such as diabetes and hypertension combined with healthy traditional nutrient-dense foods, managing life stressors and maintaining an attitude of forgiveness and gratitude promote good health and prevents Alzheimer’s.

This day is commemorated to sensitize and educate people on Alzheimer’s disease.
