Bridging education: UoN and University of Gothenburg, Sweden plan to forge global education ties

Representatives from the University of Gothenburg led by Prof. Gunnel Hellgren and Mrs. Ingeborg Herbertsson with UoN-FHS’s Dr Francis Wanyama and Dr Ezekiel Mecha flunked by FHS students at FHS campus.

In the quest to bridge education globally the University of Nairobi (UoN) is developing a plan to forge a collaborative academic partnership with the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

This initiative aims to share expertise, enhance the quality of education and research between the two institutions and to identify potential areas for collaboration and mutual growth.

In line with this, UoN through the Faculty of Health Sciences in collaboration with the University of Gothenburg organized and hosted a Biomedical talk on 29the April 2026 to further expound on the internationalization plan.

Representatives from the University of Gothenburg led by Prof. Gunnel Hellgren, the Program head, biomedical laboratory science, delivered insightful presentations, on the projected collaboration between the two institutions especially with the Faculty of Health Sciences which would constitute of interlinking of medical laboratory medicine, faculty exchange, joint research projects, and student mobility, ultimately strengthening global ties in the field.

An exchange student from Sweden, Bianca Thoren also offered a comprehensive overview of the educational landscape and student life in Sweden.

Other members of the delegation from Sweden were Dr. Camilla Hesse a senior lecturer responsible for internationalization and Mrs. Ingeborg Herbertsson coordinator internationalization.

Dr. Francis Wanyama who organized and hosted the collaborative meeting and talk urged students to take advantage of these internationalization programs and forums to expand their educational reach.

“We take internationalization of higher education very seriously here at UoN, that is why we invite other universities to have a collaboration with us,” said Dr. Wanyama in his address at the talk.

His sentiments were echoed by his co-host Dr. Ezekiel Mecha who underscored the need for students to attend such forums and learn more about other institutions so to make informed decisions on international student mobility opportunities.

This interactive session provided valuable perspectives on diverse academic environments, highlighting the unique opportunities open for exploration and aimed to foster a deeper understanding of international educational systems.
