On the 31st of August 2024, the Association of Medical Students of the University of Nairobi (AMSUN) held the 3rd white coat ceremony. This colorful event saw more than two hundred first year medical students cloaked in white coats and inaugurated in the journey of medical training.
The event was graced by Dr. Michael Magoha, a neurosurgeon and lecturer at the University of Nairobi Department of Surgery.
Dr. Magoha shared his experiences as a medical student and as a lecturer to impart wisdom to the freshmen.
"Being a medic gives you an opportunity to do much more good in a day by saving the lives of each patient you interact with," he said as he congratulated them for choosing to join medical school.
The white coat ceremony tradition is quite a symbolic part of a medical students' journey. It gives the them an opportunity to be cloaked in white coats for the first time and also a chance to listen to words of advice from those who have gone before them to help them navigate the complex journey of medical school. Hacks on how to study, what to avoid and how to cope with the weight of study material form part of talks during the event.
The Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. George Osanjo was also in attendance. He expressed his joy in seeing the students start their journey and encouraged them to stay focused and archive their dreams of becoming doctors. He also emphasized on the importance of integrating sports and other co-curricular activities in their studies just to keep a balance in their 7 years of med school.
Congratulations once again to the 2024/2025 first year medicine class.
