Faculty of Health Sciences wins Best Faculty at University’s Staff Recognition Awards

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) stood out in excellence as the best performing faculty in this year’s edition of the University’s Staff Recognition Awards.

Ever the beacon of scholarly and professional excellence in healthcare, the faculty emerged as the best performing faculty at the 2025-2026 Financial Year. This cemented the faculty as an embodiment of the standards to which the University aspires

This win highlighted the faculty’s steadfast commitment to service, excellence, dedication, diligence and discipline in realizing its mission to provide quality medical education and training.

University of Nairobi Council Chair, Professor Chacha Nyaigotti Chacha, said that the members of staff being recognized have distinguished themselves through demonstrable contributions in teaching and learning, research and innovation, administration, financial stewardship, student support, and community engagement.  

He further added that the performance of the staff being awarded, exceeded institutional benchmarks and advanced the strategic objectives of the University.

The Faculty of Health Sciences also bagged other major awards at the event. The faculty was recognized and honored for tremendous efforts in impacting the community by being named as the best in community service. These efforts included; the launch of the Data Lab and Club at Ndere Mixed Secondary School which improved digital and data literacy in Siaya County. FHS also organized The World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) 2025,

 that achieved improved detection of resistant infections, reduced misuse of antibiotics among others.

In addition, the University through the faculty played a central technical role in advancing Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness (AMR)surveillance through improved laboratory capacity, diagnostic stewardship, antimicrobial consumption studies, and quality data systems.

As a reflection of the faculty’s steadfast commitment to academia the Department of Dental Sciences emerged as the first runner up for the best performing teaching departments award.

Prof. Muthoni Mathai lived up to the faculty’s dedication to provide quality medical education, training and research, by emerging the best researcher in the University. She attained this fete by having published a total of 23 publications in the 2025-2026 Financial Year.

These publications further research and advance knowledge in the medical field.

The faculty also took center stage in the ceremony with two faculty members clinching the two top positions in resource mobilization. Dr. Loise Ombajo emerged the winner with an impressive resource portfolio, with Prof. Thumbi Mwangi emerging 1st runner up in the same category.

Their dedication to ensuring the University had resources to realize it’s vision to be a globally competitive university and mission to provide quality education were highly commended.

Dedicated service to the University was also awarded, with Prof. Anne Ombondo being honored for her long-standing service of 42 years. She serves as Associate Professor in the Psychiatry Department.

Nine members of the faculty were awarded for recording high ratings in their work. They included; Prof. Anzala Aggrey O, Prof. Gathece Loice, Dr. Gakuya Edward Muthike, Ms. Caren Awuor Awilly, Mr. Charles Namutembi, Mr. Robert Sagara Barake, Mr. Moses Odhiambo Odumbe, Ms. Christine Auma Badia and Mr. Jacob Omondi Otete. All members were exemplarily rated.

The event was attended by the University’s faculty and staff members, distinguished guests and external partners where the signing of the FY 2025–2026 Performance Contract also took place.

Congratulations to all staff members whose exceptional performance in driving the University’s mission and vision forward were recognized.
