The University of Nairobi School of Pharmacy celebrated its golden jubilee by giving back to the community through a free medical camp held on Friday, 22nd August 2025, at Olympic Primary School, Kibra Sub-County, Nairobi.
The camp, organized by the University of Nairobi Faculty of Pharmacy Alumni Association, brought together healthcare professionals, students, and partners to provide free medical services to residents of Kibra and its environs.
Hundreds of patients received free consultation, medicines, and health education during the day-long event. Services included screening for diabetes, hypertension, breast and cervical cancer, as well as vaccination for children. Specialist teams also provided dental and eye care, while patients went home with medicines at no cost.
Partners supporting the camp included the Nairobi City County Medical Department, the University of Nairobi School of Dentistry Hospital, the University of Nairobi Eye Hospital, the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, the Diabetes Management Institute (DMI), Vitali Health Services, and Equity Afya, among others.
The chief guest, Dr. Wairimu Mbogo, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) and an alumna of the UoN School of Pharmacy, was represented at the event by Dr. Ivy Ratemo, PSK CEO. She lauded the initiative as a true reflection of the role of pharmacists in society.
“This medical camp is not just a celebration, it is an embodiment of what pharmacy truly stands for. When pharmacists step into the community, screening, treating, counseling, and referring patients, they bring healthcare closer to the people. This is where our training meets our calling,” she said.
Dr. Mbogo further emphasized PSK’s commitment to grassroots healthcare through its EPIC agenda: Education, Policy, Innovation, and Collaboration. She also urged members of the public to demand quality and professional services from trained pharmacists and technologists, reminding them to look out for the green cross symbol of a pharmacist or the blue cross for pharmaceutical technologists.
Established in 1974 through a presidential decree, the UoN School of Pharmacy has trained over 2,190 pharmacists and 150 postgraduate specialists by December 2024. Its alumni serve in diverse sectors including hospitals, academia, research, industry, global health organizations, policy, and even non-traditional fields such as IT, climate change, and patient safety.
During its golden jubilee symposium held earlier this year, alumni showcased their contributions not only in Kenya but also globally, with representation in countries such as the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and Germany.
Prof. Anastasia Guantai, Chairman of the UoN Faculty of Pharmacy Alumni Association, noted that the association will continue to mentor young pharmacists and strengthen networks that enhance the profession.
“As an alumni body, we are proud to give back to society while celebrating the legacy of our alma mater. This medical camp demonstrates our mission to develop and expand the profession of pharmacy while uplifting communities,” Prof. Guantai said.
