The Faculty of Health Sciences recently hosted a pivotal internship sensitization event organized by the Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK). This crucial gathering aimed to equip final-year medical students with the insights needed to navigate their upcoming internships.
The event highlighted the significant opportunities available within the association's network of healthcare facilities.
Representatives from various CHAK affiliated hospitals, including; AIC Kijabe Hospital, AGC Tenwek Hospital, PCEA TumuTumu Hospital, PCEA Chogoria Hospital, Consolata Hospital Nkubu, Maua Methodist Hospital and AIC Litein Hospital, shared compelling accounts of their internship programs.
They emphasized the exceptional exposure to complex, high-intensity cases, facilitated by extensive facilities and specialized critical care units.
“We offer unmatched tertiary level exposure to complex high acuity cases across 15 theatres and highly specialized critical care units,” said a representative from Kijabe Hospital.
A representative from Chogoria Hospital spoke to the research opportunities and professional development available at Chogoria.
“At AIC Litein Mission Hospital interns areassured of a conducive environment for professional growth and ample clinical exposure, “said Dr. Wasonga Sylvester.
Dr. Esther Gicheha from PCEA Tumutumu hospital and other hospital representatives further detailed the benefits, including hands-on skill development, mentorship, leadership training, and the cultivation of sound clinical judgment.
Also speaking at the event FHS Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies, Prof. Rose Kosgei urged the sixth-year students to take advantage of the event as an opportunity to network with the CHAK delegates and apply for their internships through the program.
The event also acknowledged the importance of work-life balance, with presenters discussing co-curricular activities designed to help interns decompress. Current interns at the CHAK affiliated hospitals also gave their accounts of their ongoing internship experiences at the institutions.
As the sixth-year students prepare for their final examinations and the next phase of their careers, this CHAK initiative provided a clear roadmap and strong encouragement for their transition from academia to practice.
