Dr. Sylvia Opanga, a senior lecturer in the Department of Pharmacy scooped the top award at Nairobi Innovation Week 2022.
Her health innovation on Diabetic patient diary emerged top in the staff category during the 3-day event held at the University of Nairobi.
According to Dr. Opanga, her innovation was inspired by COVID-19 pandemic.
“During that time patients were not attending clinic, that is when this innovation came up to ensure continuity of care for diabetic patients,” Dr. Opanga said.
Diabetic patient diary is an app that enables continuity of care for diabetic patients outside the hospital and incorporates all aspects of patient care. It also allows for patient communication outside the hospital.
Prescription reminding device is an electronic device that is used to ensure patient compliance and reduce drug resistance by reminding patients to take their medication at the correct times.
