The Ministry of Health has appointed Professor Walter Jaoko, a distinguished academic and researcher from the University of Nairobi, as the Chair of the Benefits Package and Tariffs Panel under the 2024 insurance rules.
Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale announced the appointment alongside 15 other experts who will serve on the panel for a three-year term.
Prof. Jaoko is a lecturer at the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Director of the KAVI Institute of Clinical Research (KAVI-ICR), a globally recognized research hub based at the University of Nairobi's Faculty of Health Sciences. His leadership in clinical and epidemiological research has placed Kenya at the forefront of global health innovation, particularly in the field of HIV vaccine development and public health solutions.
Under Prof. Jaoko’s stewardship, KAVI-ICR has conducted eight HIV vaccine trials and over ten basic science and epidemiological research studies. The institute is renowned for its dedication to uncovering the social, biological, and environmental determinants of health to better prevent both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
The Benefits Package and Tariffs Panel is tasked with designing equitable and sustainable health insurance packages in line with the new universal health coverage framework. Prof. Jaoko’s appointment is expected to bring a strong research-based perspective to the panel's efforts to create a healthier and more inclusive future for all Kenyans.
His extensive experience in global health, combined with a commitment to data-driven policy-making, will be vital in linking health determinants to effective, preventive interventions.
