Over 800 girls and women from underprivileged backgrounds will gain data science skills, to apply in health science, courtesy of a project by the University of Nairobi in collaboration with the University of San Francisco.
The project dubbed ENabling Girls in AI and Growing Expertise (ENGAGE) targets to train girls and women from high schools, TVET and Universities on data science with the view to using the knowledge in data science to solve local public health problems.
Through the project, the trainees learn coding and machine learning and are equipped with tools that can help address healthcare needs in their communities.
In addition to providing job opportunities in a rapidly expanding field, ENGAGE equips young women with these skills, enabling them to enhance community health outcomes. Reaching women in rural areas, where data science expertise is uncommon, is one of ENGAGE's standout features.
