UoN researcher uncovering hidden genetic causes of childhood pneumonia in Kenya

Dr. Diana Marangu.

Dr. Diana Marangu, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Nairobi, is leading groundbreaking research aimed at uncovering hidden genetic causes of recurrent childhood pneumonia in Kenya.

Her work focuses on conditions such as inborn errors of immunity, primary ciliary dyskinesia, and cystic fibrosis conditions that often go undiagnosed but can lead to severe and lasting lung damage in children.

Through advanced diagnostic approaches, including high-speed video microscopy and sweat chloride testing, Dr. Marangu is helping build Kenya’s capacity to identify and manage these conditions early. Supported by the African Academy of Sciences APTI Fellowship, she is collaborating with global experts while adapting cutting-edge research and care models to local realities.

Her work aims to improve outcomes for children suffering recurrent pneumonia, strengthen health systems, and advance respiratory health research across Africa.
