The University of Nairobi (UoN) and Wondfo Biotech Company Limited jointly launched a laboratory training center that will offer an opportunity to local researchers jointly with their counterparts from China to innovate technologies that are best suited in addressing local health challenges.
The launch of the centre came as a result of a signed collaboration between UoN and Wondfo Biotech Company Limited, a Chinese manufacturer and distributor of diagnostic equipment.
The collaboration provides a foundation to the state of art technology in the discipline of laboratory medicine. Through this collaboration, UoN students and staff and other laboratory medicine practitioners from private/public hospitals will have an opportunity to up their knowledge in new trends of diagnostic medicine through exposure to world-class diagnostic machines as well as their utilization in the Republic of Kenya and indeed the region of East and Central Africa.
The centre which is housed at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Human Pathology will boost point-of-care testing for infectious and lifestyle diseases in the country.
Bear Xiong, the Kenyan Director for Wondfo Biotech, said the establishment of a joint laboratory center will improve the capacity of medical students and their lecturers to operate diagnostic equipment adding that Wondfo Biotech will also facilitate students and faculty members to visit its headquarters in Guangzhou as part of academic exchange and peer learning.
Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. George Osanjo said the establishment of centre aligns with the vision of the University of Nairobi and it will strengthen clinical services at Kenyatta National Hospital thereby providing a great opportunity of learning to medical students.
