The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) celebrated members of staff who distinguished themselves during the University of Nairobi Staff Recognition Awards held on 26th February, 2026.
FHS stood out by securing several prestigious awards and was recognized as the best faculty at the University of Nairobi, reflecting the dedication, innovation, and hard work of its academic and professional staff.
Among the highlights was the Department of Dental Sciences, which emerged runner-up in the Best Teaching Department category, demonstrating the faculty’s continued commitment to excellence in teaching, training, and mentorship of students.
In recognition of these outstanding achievements, the faculty leadership honoured the award recipients during a Faculty Management Meeting held on 3rd February, 2026, where Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Daniel Ojuka, presented certificates and trophies to the winners.
While congratulating the awardees, Prof. Ojuka commended their dedication and teamwork, noting that their efforts had greatly contributed to the faculty’s success.
“We want to appreciate your leadership, camaraderie, and teamwork, and everything else you did to achieve these awards. We appreciate you and encourage you to maintain the excellent work,” said Prof. Ojuka.
The faculty also produced the Best Researcher at the university, with Prof. Muthoni Mathai receiving the award after publishing 23 research papers, a remarkable achievement that underscores the faculty’s strong research culture.
In the Resource Mobilization category, FHS once again excelled by producing the top two award recipients, Dr. Loice Ombajo and Prof. Thumbi Mwangi, who were recognized for their exceptional efforts in securing research funding and partnerships that support the growth and advancement of the institution.
Prof. Ojuka applauded their contributions, noting that successful resource mobilization plays a critical role in strengthening research capacity, innovation, and institutional development.
Beyond academic excellence, the faculty also distinguished itself in community engagement, emerging as the top faculty in the Community Service category. Through various outreach initiatives, FHS has contributed to improving digital and data literacy, while also advancing community-based research initiatives.
The Dean encouraged faculty members to consistently document and share their community engagements, such as medical camps, health outreach programs, and motivational talks, to enhance the visibility of the faculty’s impact in society.
Also speaking during the meeting, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Prof. Eunice Cheserem, congratulated the award recipients for their outstanding accomplishments, noting that their achievements reflect the faculty’s unwavering commitment to excellence.
During the meeting, department chairs also received their signed FY 2025/2026 Performance Contract documents from the Dean, marking another important step in strengthening accountability and performance within the faculty.
