Dr. Betty Gikonyo – Pioneering Pediatric Cardiology and Healthcare Entrepreneurship

Dr. Betty Muthoni Gikonyo, an esteemed alumna of the University of Nairobi's Faculty of Health Sciences, has significantly contributed to Kenya's healthcare landscape as a pediatric cardiologist, medical entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

Academic and Professional Journey

Born on May 27, 1950, in Kiamabara village, Nyeri County, Dr. Gikonyo pursued her secondary education at Alliance Girls High School. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 1975 and later a Master of Medicine in Pediatrics from the University of Nairobi. Furthering her specialization, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Minnesota, USA. Recognizing the importance of administrative acumen in healthcare, she also obtained a Master of Business Administration from Daystar University.

The Karen Hospital and Heart to Heart Foundation

Driven by a vision to provide world-class healthcare in Kenya, Dr. Gikonyo co-founded The Karen Hospital in Nairobi, which officially opened its doors in 2006. The hospital, built at a cost of US$14 million, offers multi-specialty services and has expanded to include satellite branches across the country.

In 1993, she co-founded the Heart to Heart Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to providing cardiac care to underprivileged children. The foundation organizes annual Heart Runs to raise funds and awareness for children with heart ailments.

Leadership and Recognition

Dr. Gikonyo has served in various leadership roles, including Chairperson of the Nairobi Health Management Board and Chair of the University of Nairobi Alumni Association. Her contributions to medicine and society have been recognized with several awards, such as the Silver Star (SS) Presidential Award in 1998 and the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) in 2008.
