BSC MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Overview

The Medical Laboratory Science and Technology course is designed to provide scientific basis for training skilled personnel in laboratory science based techniques. Graduates would perform laboratory tests to inform decision making in the area of biomedical laboratory sciences. Members of this profession will play pivotal role in teaching research and health care.  In this area they will act as catalysts for industrial development.

The degree course shall consist of 64 course units; delivered through Lectures, Laboratory Practicals, Demonstrations, Seminars, Hospital Attachments, Research Project, Assignments, Continuous Assessment tests (CATs) and University Examinations.

A course unit shall consist of 45 hours consistent with common undergraduate courses.

The course shall take a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8academic years. Each academic year shall consist of 36 weeks comprising of 4 quarters of 9 weeks each.

Candidates are expected to attend the course units registered for in its entirety to satisfaction of the School Board.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The common admission requirements for the Bachelor of Science degrees shall apply. In addition, applicants with the following minimum qualifications shall be admissible:-

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with mean grade C+ or equivalent with at least a C+ in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics or Physics Or at least a grade B in Biological and Physical Science. Swahili o English

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade C or equivalent plus a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Medicine, Dental Sciences, Nursing Science, Medical Imaging, Pharmaceutical Technology or related disciplines from institution(s) recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.  The diploma shall be of credit level and above.

Kenya Certificate of Education [‘O’ level] Division II or equivalent plus a diploma in the disciplines indicated in section 3.2 above.  The diploma shall be of credit level and above.

Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education [‘A’ level] with two Principal passes or equivalent, one of which must be in Biology and the other in Chemistry, plus a subsidiary pass in Physics or Mathematics.

CREDIT TRANSFER AND EXEMPTIONS

TRANSFER OF CREDITS

The common regulations governing credit transfer and exemption from course units at the University of Nairobi shall apply:

Credit transfer shall be applicable for candidates from Universities or institutions recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

The number of hours, content and grading of course units for which credit transfer is sought shall be similar to that of the degree courses offered at the University of Nairobi.

Transfer of credits shall be limited to no more than one third of the total prescribed course units required for in that level.

Credit transfer shall not be allowed for Hospital Attachment, Research Project and courses in the second, third and fourth years of study.

 

EXEMPTIONS

A candidate may be exempted from some course units following approval by the University of Nairobi Senate.

A candidate seeking such exemptions shall submit a duly completed form approved by the Senate; specifying the course units for which exemption is desired and attach evidence of contents covered at University level and transcripts.

A candidate who requires exemption from courses in the second, third and fourth years of study shall in the absence of credit transfer, be required to sit University of Nairobi examination(s) and attain at least a pass grade.

Exemptions shall be limited to no more than one third of the prescribed course units in the degree programme.
