Virtual orientation of new students 2020/2021 academic year.
The College of Health Sciences (CHS) formally welcomed freshmen for 2020/2021 academic year during the first virtual orientation on 2nd September, 2020.
During the orientation, the students were addressed by the college Principal, Prof. James Machoki and Deputy Principal, Prof. Evelyn Wagaiyu.
The students were also introduced to the Deans and Directors of the various schools at the college.
In his address, Prof. Machoki warmly welcomed the freshmen to the University of Nairobi and in particular to the College of Health Sciences, a premier health training institution in the region.
He said CHS offers a total of 87 academic programmes that are serviced by a complement of 438 well-trained academic staff and a corresponding establishment of 655 research, technical, administrative and support staff.
“The diversity of programmes promotes multidisciplinary teaching, research and community service and are backed up by a well-resourced e-learning function. Facilities, equipment and other infrastructure are in place for effective delivery of these programmes,” Prof. Machoki said.
He urged the students to acquire necessary gadgets since much of the learning will be carried out online through various platforms due to COVID-19 pandemic.
The Principal asked the students to work hard in their studies and avoid misusing unlimited individual “freedom” one gets after joining the university and was not experienced during both primary and secondary school days.
“It is my hope and prayer that you will put the new-found ‘freedom’ into good use through pursuit of academic excellence which is the cardinal aim of this august Institution. I say so because at the end of the day, you will be expected to sit and pass examinations in accordance to the existing regulations,” Prof. Machoki said.
He encouraged the students to use the vast wealth of academic resources available online saying once the university resumes face to face operations, they will be able to acquaint themselves with laboratories and other facilities used for teaching and research.
